How to Beat Summer Fatigue in India? Cooling Foods, Herbs, and Lifestyle Changes for Optimal Energy and Wellness

Summers are bright and sunny, but the whips of the summer heat can be exhausting. The unforgiving summer fatigue sips all your energy leaving you lifeless and sleepy.

A lot of patients flock into my clinic complaining about the summer strokes. Dizziness, fatigue, headache, and nausea are some of the common problems and complaints. Some people also experience restlessness and irritability, and even digestive problems, due to the summer heat.

It sure takes away the fun from the ‘fun season’!

What’s making your summer sluggish?

The first and foremost culprit causing fatigue is dehydration. In summer you lose a lot of water in the form of sweat. And it’s not just water that you lose, you also excrete minerals and salt. So, it is very important to hydrate with water and juice.

Secondly, Low levels of salt in the body can affect your energy levels. It is the main cause of dizziness, headaches, and muscle cramps. So, if you sweat too much or exercise during the summer then make sure to replenish with electrolytes.

Thirdly, being in the sun can decrease melatonin production in the body. This is an integral hormone that helps to regulate our mood. Thus, low levels of melatonin can be a reason for feeling low.

Fourthly, the energy drinks and cold water that you grab to beat the heat do more harm than good. The carbonated drinks are laden with sugar which makes your digestive system sluggish. Cold water also diminishes your digestive fire.

Some of the common symptoms of summer fatigue are dizziness, nausea, dark-colored urine and confusion, headache, and rarely fever. While mild heat exhaustion can be taken care of with simple knacks, a severe heat stroke may demand immediate attention.

Here is what I advise all my patients for beating the summer fatigue.

Ayurvedic Ways to Survive the Summer Fatigue

  1. The main reasons for summer fatigue are perspiration and dehydration. So, without any doubt, the first rule is to drink plenty of water and gulp down the juices to keep the body hydrated. Try drinking water from a copper vessel.
  2. In the south, people trust Sarsaparilla for the summer woes. It’s a cooling drink with preventive and curative properties against the troubles caused by summer heat.
  3. The next best way to beat the summer fatigue is through a power-pack punch of nutrition. Starting with a great breakfast. Follow a disciplined routine. Eat light and healthy. Avoid heavy oily meals that take a toll on the digestive system.
  4. Vegetables such as tomatoes, eggplant, and cucumber are rich in antioxidants that help protect against ultraviolet light.
  5. Yogurt, buttermilk, Kokum, watermelon, mangoes, and amla also keeps the josh high.
  6. Exercise can help in warding off fatigue. A tired body might just crave crashing into the bed but research claims that exercise works better than a nap in replenishing energy.
  7. Sleep is pivotal in refueling our energy and preventing summer fatigue syndrome. Sleep deprivation is one of the major reasons for fatigue and exhaustion and when clubbed with the sizzling summer it can definitely drain all strength leaving one drooling over the bed.
  8. Grabbing a chilled beer might seem like the best option but on the contrary, alcohol is diuretic which means it can increase dehydration leading to fatigue and laziness.
  9. Don’t go for carbonated beverages or packaged fruit juices. They are not good for your body. It’s better to eat whole fruits and if you want juice then go for fresh homemade juice. I would suggest the easy and tasty lime juice as your summer potion.
  10. Take good care of your skin and hair and wear protective gear like sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, gloves, and scarves.

Five research-backed hacks to help you beat summer fatigue:

  1. Stay hydrated: Dehydration can cause fatigue and headaches, so make sure you’re drinking enough water throughout the day. Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water per day and more if you’re sweating or exercising.
  2. Get adequate sleep: Good sleep is essential for overall health and can help combat fatigue. Stick to a regular sleep schedule and aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night.
  3. Exercise regularly: Regular physical activity can boost energy levels and combat fatigue. Try to get at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise each day.
  4. Limit caffeine and alcohol intake: Caffeine and alcohol can disrupt sleep patterns and exacerbate fatigue. Try to limit your consumption of these substances, especially in the evenings.
  5. Take short breaks during the day: Taking short breaks during the day can help reduce stress and recharge your batteries. Step outside for some fresh air, stretch or take a quick walk.

By following these tips, you can help beat summer fatigue and maintain your energy levels throughout the season. If fatigue persists or interferes with your daily activities, consider speaking with your doctor.
