Methi ( Fenugreek) for Diabetes Management

Diabetes is a global epidemic to which millions lose their lives every year. It is a chronic battle that impairs the quality and longevity of life. So, in this blog, I bring you the efficacy of Methi in diabetes management. Experts say it’s a diabetic supertonic sitting right on your kitchen shelf.

Diabetes is high blood sugar levels. Blood sugar levels spike because of insufficiency of insulin or the body’s inability to utilize insulin. This sugar disease can cause many fatal diseases and result in organ failures if not managed.

From cardiovascular diseases to cancer, diabetes increases the risk of many fatal diseases. If not managed well, diabetes can also result in nerve damage, kidney damage, amputations, and blindness.

As I already said, the use of Methi for managing different diseases is well-documented in Ayurveda. In recent times, modern researchers have also come to the same conclusion. From managing diabetes to boosting testosterone to enhancing breast milk, Methi seeds have many healing properties. 

Emerging research also says that Methi seeds can help lower inflammation and reduce the risk of inflammatory diseases. Methi seeds also help in appetite control and aid in weight loss. It can also help in curing menstrual pain and menopausal problems.

1. Hypoglycemic Properties of Methi

Research shows that fenugreek seeds exhibit hypoglycemic properties. Fenugreek contains a constituent called galactomannan which shows promising anti-diabetic properties. Further, the anti-oxidant effect of Methi supports its anti-diabetic effect. 

A study titled “Evaluation of the oral hypoglycemic effect of Trigonella foenum-graecum L. in normal mice” was amongst the earliest to establish the anti-diabetic properties of Methi. It established the hypoglycemic effect in mice when fed 1 gram per kilo of their body weight.

2. Methi Improves Glucose Metabolism 

Diabetes is caused by the failure of processing glucose. Methi contains a component called diosgenin which can promote glucose metabolism. Diosgenin helps dissolve the excess sugars and glucose in the food. This prevents sugar from mixing in the bloodstream. 

A study by Japanese researchers on the efficacy of fenugreek seeds for type 2 diabetes established this. The study is titled “Diosgenin present in fenugreek improves glucose metabolism by promoting adipocyte differentiation and inhibiting inflammation in adipose tissues”.

3. Methi Seeds on Non-Insulin Dependent Patients

This bitter herb is also efficient in reducing blood sugar levels in non-insulin-dependent diabetes patients. This was established through modern studies as early as 1988. A study titled “Glucose-lowering effect of fenugreek in non-insulin-dependent diabetics” established this. 

The study showed fenugreek soaked in water helped reduce post-prandial blood sugar levels. Water infused with Methi seeds is a popular natural remedy for managing diabetes. 

4. Methi seeds in managing Type 2 Diabetes

A study by Indian researchers titled “Effect of Fenugreek Seeds on Glycemic Control and Insulin Resistance in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus” studied the effect of Methi seeds on 25 newly diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes patients.

It reported significant improvements in blood sugar levels, serum triglycerides, and HDL cholesterol. The study concluded that the use of Methi in diabetic patients showed better results in diabetes-related readings as compared to the placebo group. 

5. Methi seeds in managing Type 1 Diabetes

A study titled “Effect of fenugreek seeds on blood-glucose and serum-lipids in type-I diabetes” established the efficacy of fenugreek seeds on Type 1 Diabetes. The study revealed that patients reported a 54% reduction in urinary glucose excretion in just 24 hours. 

Further, Serum total cholesterol, LDL and VLDL cholesterol, and triglyceride levels were also reduced significantly. This was on the consumption of 100g of fenugreek powder in two equal doses per day.

Even Research says – Go for a Fenugreek Diet for Diabetes!

Ayurveda believes food is the best medicine. In Ayurveda, food and medicine are considered synonymous. And now modern researchers are also coming to the same conclusions. A healthy diet works much better than any medicine!

That’s why experts are now probing the efficacy of natural remedies in the treatment of chronic disabilities. One such effective remedy that is now scientifically proven is the use of Methi in diabetes.

A study by European researchers titled “Fenugreek Bread: A Treatment for Diabetes Mellitus” suggested the consumption of Fenugreek Bread. This is prepared from 5% fenugreek flour mixed with 95% standard wheat bread flour. Experts suggest this is effective in keeping blood sugar levels low. 

Further, a Fenugreek diet can also help diabetes patients reduce their dependency on insulin and other medicines. You can also go for the simple ‘Methi water’ or Methi powder and other simple cost-effective alternatives to control your blood sugar naturally.
