DIY Ayurvedic Mosquito Repellent

Many would agree that one of the most annoying living creatures on earth is the mosquito. More than their bite and itch, it’s the nagging sound they make that’s intolerable. Most of us unwillingly trust the chemical repellents to fight mosquitoes, but you can make your own ayurvedic mosquito repellent at home too!

Chemical mosquito repellents can drive mosquitoes away but it’s temporary and they are harmful to humans too. Inhaling these mosquito repellents can cause severe breathing problems and even lung disorders in the long run.

So, natural Homemade Mosquito Repellent is the best solution.

A few herbs and plants can act as a natural mosquito repellent when you plant them inside the house. Lemon Balm, Citronella, Lavender, Peppermint and Marigold are small plants that can ward off mosquitoes naturally.

Apart from growing these plants in your surroundings, there are a few practices that can help you in keeping the mosquitoes away. In this blog, I am sharing 7 Ayurvedic mosquito repellent recipes that you can try at home. They are safe, effective and are testified by your ancestors.

7 DIY Ayurvedic mosquito repellent

Check out these 7 Ayurvedic plant-based mosquito repellents that you can make at home in no time.

1. Mustard, Neem and Sea Salt Fumes

Take equal quantities of mustard, neem and sea salt powders. Take an iron bowl and burn coal in it. Now sprinkle the powder in small amounts. As the fumes start to form fan it slowly to spread the smoke.

Carry this pot to each room and let the fume cover your entire house. Close all the doors, windows and other inlets of mosquitoes. This fume will ward off the mosquitoes from your house and it’s not harmful to humans.

2. Deodar, Lemongrass and Neem oil Mix

Take equal parts of deodar, lemongrass and neem oil and mix it well. Apply this blend on your skin to keep mosquitoes away. Tulsi is another effective herb that can help in beating the mosquito’s bite. You can make a paste of dried tulsi leaves blended in coconut oil and apply it as a repellent.

This combo is a great mosquito repellent that’s skin-friendly as well as effective. Mix equal portions of coconut oil in equal quality oil of neem and apply it to the body. This is an excellent solution for all outdoor activities. It can protect you from mosquito bites for at least 8 to 10 hours.

5. Baking Soda and Vinegar

Take 1 cup of vinegar and about ¼ cup of baking soda. Take an empty bottle and cut it in half. Add baking soda to the bottom part of the bottle and invert the top part to make a funnel. Pour vinegar into this funnel and place it outside your room.

When baking soda comes in contact with vinegar, the reaction releases carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide attracts mosquitoes and it acts like a trap that catches and kills mosquitoes.

You can also mix clove oil with a carrier oil like coconut oil and apply it to the exposed portions of your body. This is an excellent natural mosquito repellent and is safe on your skin.
