 UTI is an infection that can occur in any part of the urinary tract, including the kidneys, ureters, bladder or urethra. And the most common cause of UTI s bacteria from the bowel. Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus saprophyticus account for about 80% of cases. However, sometimes fungi and viruses can also cause UTI.

Though UTI can occur in men too, it’s more common in women. In fact, nearly 50 per cent of all women will experience UTI at some point in their lives.

Hydration

Dehydration is a common and proven risk factor of UTI. This is because a high intake of water ensures frequent urination which helps flush bacteria from the urinary tract. A clinical study found that low urine output increases the risk of UTI.

Another study stated that an increase in hydration can help in decreasing the frequency of UTI. For best results, drink at least eight glasses of water every day. Further, limiting the intake of caffeinated drinks and soda can help.

Empty your bladder more often 

Frequent urination can help eliminate the infection by moving bacteria out of the bladder. Holding your urine for long allows the bacteria to multiply and grow in the bladder. It is also a good practice to urinate after having sex. Sexual intercourse can push bacteria deeper into the urethra.

Ideally, you need to urinate every 2-3 hours.

Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day as that will increase your frequency of urination. And always rush to the washroom as soon as you get the urge to urinate.

Increasing your Vitamin C intake

Research says that increasing the intake of vitamin C can help prevent UTI. Vitamin C increases the acidity of urine and thus kills off any bacteria that cause infection. A 2007 study of UTIs in pregnant woman noted that 100 mg of Vitamin C have a protective effect. 

Another study reported that a high intake of vitamin C can decrease the risk of UTI. Rather than supplements, it is better to opt for fruits and vegetables that are high in Vitamin C. Oranges, Papaya, Grapefruit, Kiwi, broccoli are good sources of Vitamin C.

Drinking Cranberry Juice

Cranberry juice is one of the best natural remedies for urinary tract infections. It prevents bacteria from infecting the urinary tract. A recent study asked women with UTI to drink 240 ml of cranberry juice every day for 24 weeks. It concluded that women who drank cranberry juice had fewer episodes of UTI.

Another study reported that consuming cranberry juice can lower the frequency of UTIs. Further, a 2015 study showed that cranberry juice can cut down the risks of UTI by 50 per cent. However, remember to use only unsweetened Cranberry juice.

Trust the power of a Probiotic

Probiotics are beneficial microorganisms that promote a healthy balance of bacteria in the gut. Some studies also show that probiotics may decrease the risk of UTIs. Another study found that taking probiotics while on antibiotics can help keep the gut balance intact.

The best natural sources of probiotics are fermented foods like yoghurt or kefir.

Diet

Diet plays a very important role in maintaining a healthy gut and body. Certain foods can irritate the bladder and certain foods keep your bladder cool and calm.

Foods that can irritate the bladder are coffee, alcohol, artificial sweeteners and spicy foods. Things that you need to include in your diet include pears, bananas, green beans, potatoes, lean proteins, whole grain, nuts and eggs.

Simple Tips to prevent UTI

  • Practice good bathroom and hygiene habits.
  • Never hold your urine for too long.
  • Always take a pee after sexual intercourse this prevents the spread of bacteria.
  • Spermicides can increase the risk of UTI.
  • After the toilet always wipe from front to back. Wiping from back to front can cause the bacteria from the anus to spread to the urinary tract.
  • Garlic extracts have antimicrobial properties that help in blocking the growth of bacteria.
  • Wear light cotton underwear and change your underwear daily.
  • Sip green tea, the catechin in green tea has antimicrobial properties. It also works as a great diuretic.
