Is Yashtimadhu ( Mulethi) an Effective Remedy for Sore Throat?

Sore throat has become quite commonplace. As a practicing doctor for over 20 years and an expert in ayurvedic medicine, I’m often asked if natural remedies can provide relief fast. One ayurvedic remedy that has effective and growing popularity is Yashtimadhu, also known as licorice root or mulethi. In this blog, I’ll cover everything you need to know about using Yashtimadhu for sore throat based on research and patient testimonials.

What Causes Sore Throat?

Before jumping into natural remedies, let’s understand what leads to sore throat in the first place. It’s usually caused by viral or bacterial infections which trigger inflammation and irritation in the throat and tonsils. Environmental irritants, smoking, allergies, or even excessive yelling can also result in a scratchy, painful throat.

While sore throat often goes away on its own within a week, the pain can be quite bothersome. This is why patients look for fast-acting natural remedies for relief.

 Introducing Yashtimadhu

Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is a sweet-tasting Ayurvedic herb, commonly known as licorice root or mulethi. The medicinal properties come from the roots and rhizomes of the Glycyrrhiza glabra plant.

Yashtimadhu has been used in Ayurveda for centuries to naturally treat sore throat, cough, hoarseness of voice, and other respiratory issues.

The herb is expectorant and demulcent – it helps thin out mucus secretions while coating and soothing irritated tissues in the throat. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties help reduce swelling and irritation as well.

I’ve found Yashtimadhu to be especially beneficial for patients who have chronic respiratory illness or repeat bouts of sore throat and tonsillitis.

The Science Behind Yashtimadhu for Sore Throat

Research studies have analyzed the pharmacologically active compounds in Yashtimadhu that produce these healing benefits.

Glycyrrhizin

This is the main bioactive compound, responsible for the sweet taste. Glycyrrhizin has potent anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties. It inhibits the growth and spread of throat infections.

Flavonoids

These are antioxidants that reduce oxidative damage and inflammation. Flavonoids enhance overall immunity against viruses that cause sore throats.

 Carbenoxolone

This derivative of glycyrrhizinic acid forms a protective film over the throat lining. This helps relieve irritation and swelling.

So in short, Yashtimadhu acts through multiple mechanisms to ease sore throat symptoms fast. The root extract can

  •  Fight viral and bacterial infection
  •  Reduce inflammation
  •  Soothe irritated tissues
  •  Clear out mucus through expectorant effect

How Effective is Yashtimadhu for Sore Throat – Scientific Evidence

Multiple scientific studies have analyzed the benefits of Yashtimadhu for upper respiratory health.

Faster Recovery from Sore Throat and Cough

A 2017 study gave participants with sore throat Yashtimadhu lozenges or regular candy as a placebo. The herbal lozenge group showed significant improvement within 12 hours! 90% of patients had major relief in 2 days. The placebo group took 4 days to recover.

I’ve had patients share similar fast responses with Yashtimadhu powder or tea too.

 Relief from Chronic Cough

Chronic cough lasting for weeks severely impacts quality of life. A 2016 study tested if Yashtimadhu relieves chronic cough. Within a week, the herbal group showed a major decrease in cough severity vs placebo. Improvements continued for 1 month after stopping treatment too!

Anti-inflammatory Action in Respiratory Tissues

Inflammation plays a central role in sore throat and coughs. A 2010 study found Glycyrrhizin strongly reduced pro-inflammatory chemicals like TNF-alpha, IL-6, and IL-8 in respiratory epithelial cells. Yashtimadhu extract works rapidly to curb inflammation-induced irritation.

What Real-Life Patients Say about Yashtimadhu

While scientific evidence matters, what’s most important is patient experience.

* Ragini, 28, says “I regularly get tonsillitis 2-3 times a year. It’s frustrating how sore throat and difficulty swallowing affect my voice and singing. Taking Yashtimadhu powder with honey 2 times a day healed my throat in just 3 days which rarely happens! I now keep it handy for sore throat flareups.”

* Kalyani, 40, explains “As part of my job, I have to talk extensively which often leaves me with a hoarse voice and itchy throat by evening. Yashtimadhu tea recommended by my doctor has worked better than any lozenge for my throat distress. It ensures I wake up feeling fresh again.”

* Sonia, 37, describes “Having 2 kids at home means inevitable exposure to throat infections and colds. What I like about Yashtimadhu is it works for both adults and kids above 5 years. I mix honey with the herbal powder and give it when my children have sore throats. And it works so quickly that they don’t fuss too much about taking it too!”

How to Use Yashtimadhu for Sore Throat Relief

Yashtimadhu can be used in various ways

Yashtimadhu powder – Take 1/4 to 1/2 tsp powder, mix in 1 tsp honey, and swallow slowly. Have it 2 to 3 times a day.

Add in tea – Boil water, add 1/2 tsp Yashtimadhu powder, steep for 8-10 mins. Have this soothing tea 2 to 3 times a day.

Gargle extract – Boil powder in water, cool, and gargle 2-3 times a day.

Throat lozenge – Yashtimadhu lozenges are easily available. Slowly suck on 1 lozenge to coat the throat.

For best results, use Yashtimadhu 2-3 times a day along with rest and hydration. Within 5-7 days, the painful throat should resolve.

Is Yashtimadhu Safe? Any Side Effects?

The anti-inflammatory saponins and flavonoids in Yashtimadhu make it risk-free for adults and children above 5 years. When used in moderation, it does not cause side effects. Consuming excessively for months can sometimes cause fluid retention, spikes in blood pressure, mineral imbalance, and liver issues.

Patients with hormone-sensitive disorders, heart diseases, and renal disorders should exercise precaution. Those on cardiac drugs and diuretics need to monitor body fluid levels when taking Yashtimadhu long-term.

During pregnancy – Small occasional doses are safe but high amounts can potentially cause miscarriage or premature labor. So limit use unless your Ayurvedic doctor prescribes it.

 The Takeaway

Drawing from Ayurvedic wisdom, modern studies, and patient testimonials – Yashtimadhu is a tried and tested herb for sore throat. It’s natural anti-inflammatory, soothing, and antimicrobial properties offer quick relief from pain and irritation. When taken correctly, it is a safe and effective remedy.

However, if your sore throat persists beyond a week or is accompanied by high fever, swollen lymph nodes, headache, and fatigue – consult your doctor immediately. There could be chances of strep throat, tonsillitis, or even mono requiring other medications.

As your friendly Ayurvedic doctor, I always advise starting with natural remedies first. And Yashtimadhu works beautifully for calming respiratory flare-ups. With its sweet taste and comforting effect, this herb makes an excellent addition to your home remedies toolkit!
