9 Surprising Reasons Why Women Tend to Live Longer Than Men

Women all over the world are outliving men. It’s not my claim. Science, research, genetics, anthropology and social factors say the same. One of my patients asked me this, Doctor ‘Why do women live longer than men?’

Why do women live longer than men?

It’s quite simple!

Here is a list of reasons why women live longer than men –

1. Dangerous Adventures

Have you ever seen a woman standing on the electric pole or racing a bike to death? Do you see women climbing house roofs and playing dangerous games? 

2. Bad adventures

Do you know 80 percent of people who die from drowning are male?

Men are more likely to participate in water sports under the influence of alcohol. It seems jumping in wild waters is not thrilling enough that the daredevils also forgo wearing a life jacket. Accidental deaths are particularly high among young males aged 15-24.

3. Men are More Aggressive

Men tend to be more aggressive than women which often lands them into unnecessary trouble. This higher risk-seeking appetite has often resulted in unfavorable outcomes.

4. Unhealthy lifestyle choices

In addition, men are also more prone to unhealthy lifestyle. Be it smoking, drinking, overeating, or unhealthy eating ethics. Men stand far from the recommended lifestyle.

While women either refrain from such a lifestyle or do it moderately. They are inherently inclined to maintain a balance in their life. These unhealthy habits often result in fatal chronic illnesses.

So, lifestyle and nature are one of the many factors to blame for their quick exit! However, that’s not the only reason. When we excavated into the deeper levels of their biology, we found something amazing.

5. Biological Factors

Male mortality is 25 to 30 percent greater than female mortality, even when they refrain from this unhealthy lifestyle. The odds of survival are far better in girl infants even in harsh conditions as compared to baby boys.

Girls are born fighters. Remember the times you read in the news a girl baby is disposed of in a bin to die in the rain and cold and still she springs back to life?

6. Genetic Advantage

Women have a genetic advantage too. They are born with two X chromosomes, which endows them with double copies of every gene. Women have a spare gene to take over in case the other goes faulty. Keeping a spare is just a women’s thing!

7. Hormonal advantage

Another biological factor that makes women live long is their hormones. The female hormone estrogen is a protector. It facilitates the elimination of bad cholesterol and offers extra immunity. Whereas testosterone has been linked to violence and risk-taking.

Women with high levels of estrogen are at a lower risk of coronary heart disease. Coronary heart disease is a major reason for the difference in mortality between men and women.

8. The power of reproduction

The power of reproduction in women results in greater longevity in females. The role of women in reproduction is more demanding. They are more caring and alert by nature.

9. Medical aid

Men are less open to the idea of seeking medical help early and are more likely to be non-adherent to the treatment. While women are on their toes with their medical reports, they are more inclined to follow a healthy routine to maintain their health and beauty.

Research: Several factors have been identified as contributing to the fact that women tend to live longer than men:

  1. Biology: Women have a stronger immune system and lower risk of heart disease and certain types of cancer compared to men.
  2. Lifestyle factors: Men engage in more risk-taking behaviors, such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, which can negatively impact health and lifespan.
  3. Social and cultural factors: Women often have better access to health care and social support and engage in healthier behaviors.
  4. Hormonal differences: Estrogen, the primary female sex hormone, has protective effects on the cardiovascular system, while testosterone, the primary male sex hormone, has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease.
  5. Occupational hazards: Men are more likely to engage in hazardous occupations, such as construction and firefighting, which can impact lifespan.

These factors contribute to a global trend where, on average, women live 5-10 years longer than men. However, the gap in life expectancy between the sexes varies by country and is influenced by a range of social, economic, and cultural factors.

Men are at higher risk

Women suffer from higher levels of stress, depression, and anxiety, and are plagued by diseases like asthma, migraines, arthritis, etc. which deter the quality of life but are not fatal, whereas, men are at a higher risk of fatal diseases including heart and other vital organ failures.

In conclusion, all these factors, have contributed to the blessed years added to women’s life. Earlier, women’s mortality was higher because of the poor care available for women’s health but now with healthcare illuminating every corner of the earth, women are beating the men in the race of life by 4-5 years.

Implementing healthy behaviors such as regular exercise, maintaining a healthy diet, and reducing alcohol and tobacco use can improve overall health and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Additionally, fostering strong social connections and support networks can provide emotional and practical support, reducing stress levels and improving overall well-being.

In conclusion, while women may have a biological advantage when it comes to aging, the longevity gap between men and women is influenced by a range of factors. By understanding these factors and taking steps to improve their health, men can increase their lifespan and improve their overall well-being.
