My mother always believed in the blessings of nature. She often enlightened us about oodles of benefits that we got from simple things. One such thing that was an indispensable part of my summers was the Basil seeds.

The holy basil plant bedecks the courtyard of every household. Some use the leaves for cough and cold, some use it for making tea, and some massage the leaves to calm a migraine pain. These are the well-known perks of this little but mighty herb.

Basil seeds are low in carbs and high in proteins which is a very rare combination. Sabja seeds have about 11gm of proteins, 5gm of carbs, and 2gm of fiber. Along with 50% linoleic acid, 22% linolenic acid, 15% oleic acid, and 8% unsaturated fatty acids. It is also a good source of omega-3 and 6 fatty acids.

My mother’s yummy KamaKasturi seed recipes

Mothers are no less than doctors when it comes to their baby’s nutrition. My mother too owned a degree in it. Here is how my mother used Basil in her recipes –

  1. She accentuated the goodness of milk with soaked Tulsi seeds and served it as my morning power booster.
  2. For my dad, she soaked the seeds and served it with warm water or natural fruit juices.
  3. These seeds can be combined with any juice or shakes and it makes a perfect summer drink!!! 

 Studies that have investigated the effect of basil seeds on weight loss:

  1. A study published in the “Journal of Medicinal Plants Studies” found that basil seed consumption reduced body weight, body mass index, and waist circumference in overweight adults after 12 weeks.
  2. Another study published in the “International Journal of Preventive Medicine” found that basil seed consumption reduced body weight, body fat, and food intake in overweight women.
  3. A study published in the “Journal of Functional Foods” found that basil seed supplementation improved body weight, body mass index, and fat mass in obese rats.

Caution!

This is not recommended to pregnant ladies as it can lower the level of estrogen. It is best to consult the doctor before administration.

OMG!!! Great is the Basil plant as it’s leaves n great is it’s seeds..!
When I was studying in middle school, our neibour was an archak family. As archak’s wife was affectionate towards me, she used to tell Basil’s divine stories. I have seen she used to collect it’s seeds.
But after reading your write-up, I wondered at it’s greatness n amazed at our ancestors’ greatness🙏🙏🙏
