Natural Remedies to Combat Seasonal Illness: 10 Simple Tips

Seasonal sickness is a real deal for many people. Cold, cough, flu, fever, fatigue, and headache are some of the common seasonal complaints. Allergies and respiratory issues also see a peak. Blame the seasonal allergens. So, in this blog, I will share some amazing Natural remedies for Seasonal Sickness.

Research shows that most of the sick leaves are recorded during season change!

Season changes make a person more vulnerable to infections. This is because seasonal allergens attack your body keeping your immune system super busy. Also, these allergens cause nasal inflammation which makes way for viruses to enter. And since your immune system is preoccupied, you are out of resources to fight other intruders.

Thus, sickness during season change is so common.

An Ayurvedic view on Seasonal sickness

According to Ayurveda, there are six seasons (Ritus) in a year and your body shall adapt to the changing nature of each season. Ayurveda explains simple daily rituals to fight seasonal sickness in Ritucharya

Ritucharya means seasonal routine. A person’s diet and lifestyle shall be modified to match the changing requirements of each season. The changes in season affect the doshas in our body. And an imbalance in the dosha is the main reason for our sickness.

Thus, to live a healthy life it is important to stay in perfect harmony with nature. Changes in diet and lifestyle can bring that balance with the natural cycle. The aim is to optimize your immune system, digestion, and energy.

Ayurvedic tips to survive Seasonal Sickness in Winter

Seasonal sickness is at the worst during winters. The winter chills and weakened immune system make everyone vulnerable to sickness. But not everyone gets sick.

According to Ayurveda simple self-care tips can help you stay healthy through the fall:

1. Turmeric milk

The famous golden milk is the best beverage for winters. Drinking turmeric milk every day keeps you safe from nasty cold and flu. You can enhance this immune booster by adding cinnamon or cardamom powder.

2. Abhyanga

Ayurvedic body massage is another amazing tip for chilly winters. Sesame or mustard oil keeps you warm and helps you fight cold and cough. This also keeps your skin from getting dry and itchy which is very common in the winters.

3. Coconut oil

Coconut oil is a must-have at home during the winters. It helps in managing dry and frizzy hair which is a common winter problem. Coconut oil nourishes and strengthens your hair. Massage your scalp with coconut oil to make your hair strong and shiny.

5. Warm foods

The food turns so cold so quick in winters. But our digestive system is weaker in the winter as compared to summer. That’s why indigestion, gas, bloating and stomach problems are so common during winters. So, one tip to remember is to eat your food warm.

6. Stay active

This is a golden rule that you must follow every season. Though in winters it’s more difficult to get up and go for a walk, it’s important to keep yourself active. Try yoga, dance or home exercises, if you don’t want to step out!

7. Rest

Winters are all about long nights and short days. So, make sure to give your mind and body the rest it needs. Have your dinner by 8 or 9 and hit the bed by 10. Eight hours of sleep is especially important during winters.

8. Choose your foods right

In Ayurveda, the tastes should vary according to the rhythms of the season. In winter, the best choices are sweet, sour, and salty foods. And the ones to avoid are bitter, astringent, and pungent tastes.

Ayurvedic tips to survive Seasonal Sickness in Summer

During summer, the sun takes away the cooling properties of the earth. The pitta is at the peak and that causes Pitta-related problems. Fatigue, exhaustion, sunburn, excessive perspiration, skin problems, and diarrhoea. These are the most common seasonal problems in summer.

Here are a few tips to keep away from falling sick in summer:

1. Wake up early

Ayurveda recommends waking up during the Brahmamuhurta in the summers. The morning starts early and the sun arrives soon. So, maintain your circadian rhythm by waking up early.

2. Morning regime

In summers, begin your day by eliminating the previous day’s toxins. Follow this up with some yoga and Surya namaskar. This prepares your body for a nutritious pack of fresh breakfast.

3. Hydration

The most important thing in summers is hydration. Add a dash of lime and mint and drink it throughout the day. Avoid chilled water or carbonated or packaged beverages. Also, prefer whole fruits over juices.

4. Choose the right foods

Choose foods that have high water content. Melons, pears, grapes, cucumber, milk are good in summers. Avoid sour and spicy foods in this season. You can also try Amla, Brahmi, neem, and Guduchi to keep your pitta dosha in balance.

5. Rose water

Use rose water for glowing skin and rose water beverages for cooling your body. Natural herbal drinks not only keep you hydrated but also keep your digestive fire cool.

Apart from these essentials, remember to take 30 minutes to walk at sunrise. This will stimulate your mood and spark your creativity. In addition to that, the morning rays help in the production of Vitamin D which is essential to fight sickness.
