  • high blood pressure

  • migraines
  • negative emotions

Anger issues have devasted many a life

Hitler would be the perfect example to cite here. He unleashed his anger and brought hell on earth. But in the end, this Nazi dictator committed suicide by gunshot. How tragic is that!!! It was his unaddressed anger issues that consumed him!

And he is just one of the many who are still struggling with anger issues.

A few days back, a 64-year-old man visited my clinic. He looked older than his age, pale and sick. I asked him about his troubles, and he first told me about his chronic gastric issues. As I probed deeper, he started to open up.

He was exceptionally brilliant and had a bright professional career. But his anger issues destroyed his career. He changed jobs and shifted places but his own attitude was his enemy, so misery followed his footsteps.

At 64, he had no savings, no work, no accomplishments. His wife is the only breadwinner in a family of 5. There is no peace in the family and no respect in society. Earlier he was diagnosed with clinical depression. And all of his misery is rooted in his anger issues!

We all know reacting out of anger causes casualty, but bottling up your feelings does no good either. That too affects your health in a bad way. Suppressing your emotions leads to physical stress.

The rise in anger issues

Anger issues are witnessing a monumental rise and the increasing crime rate is a testimony. Anxiety and depression too are on the rise. Emotions are enflamed, logic and reasoning have taken a backseat and people are acting out!

Blame the increased use of gadgets or the distance from nature. The strained work-life balance or the spike in stress. This generation is suffering from severe mental issues. Anger is one of them.

Most people see anger as an attitude problem rather than an issue in the mental wiring.

But, much like stress, depression, or anxiety, anger too can be managed!

Ayurveda on anger issues: Foods for hostile mood!

According to Ayurveda, your reaction to any situation is governed by your doshas. There are three predominant doshas viz. Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

Anger is caused by an aggravation of your Pitta dosha or the fire energy.

Pitta is responsible for your understanding and judgment. When it gets disturbed, your judgment is impaired. This leads to misunderstanding, anger, and hostility. That’s why it’s important to control your Pitta dosha with a pitta pacifying diet.

As Ayurveda always says, everything you eat has a direct effect on your health. It not only impacts your physical health but also your mood, consciousness, and mental health.

Foods you should avoid

Ayurveda says hot, spicy, oily, salty or very much fermented foods can aggravate your anger. Citrus or sour fruits can also have a similar effect. People with anger issues should also refrain from alcohol or caffeine.

Junk food, high in sugar, salt or oil is an absolute no-no. They are low in nutrients and leave the person nutrient deficient. This is a big stressor for the body which can result in rage.

Foods you should eat

Cooling foods like cucumber, ghee, watermelon, leafy greens, and raisins are good for them. Cheese, tofu and basmati rice are also pitta-pacifying foods. Sweet and astringent tastes work well. A glass of buttermilk or natural coolants can help!

Ayurveda also suggests the use of herbal teas to combat anger issues. Tulsi tea or licorice tea is a herbal beverage that has cooling energies to calm the pitta. It also helps in balancing your emotions. Here is the recipe for Chamomile Tulsi Rose Tea.

Chamomile Tulsi Rose Tea

  • 1/8 tsp. chamomile
  • 1/8 tsp. tulsi
  • 1/4 tsp. rose petal powder
  • Steep in one cup of hot water and let it cool.
  • Drink this tea three times a day after each meal.

Another drink that’s been used for generations to keep the head cool is a combination of grape juice with cumin, fennel, and sandalwood. This drink helps in settling the boiling feelings. It also relieves sensations in the stomach which is a mood spoiler!

Grape Juice with Cumin, Fennel and Sandalwood

  • 1 cup of grape juice
  • ½ tsp cumin, fennel and sandalwood powder
  • Drink this cooling juice.

Apart from these dietary modifications, here are a few simple home remedies for anger issues that you can try.

Meditation is the biggest antidote for stress. It also helps in relieving the negative emotions bubbling in your chest. Meditation has a calming effect on the mind which helps you see things straight. It improves mindfulness which helps you to handle your emotions better.

Sit in a calm dark space. Close your eyes. Chant om or focus on the emptiness of your mind.

4. Get a calming feet massage before bed

Coconut oil is one of the most amazing gifts of nature. It has cooling properties and rubbing the oil on the soles of your feet helps to cool down pitta. This releases the stress and aids in calming your anger. You can also use sesame oil. Padabhyanga also has other benefits. The feet have several nerve endings and massaging the feet benefits the whole body. It also balances your Pitta Dosha and improves your sleep.

This will help to balance your emotions.

Another simple home remedy that works great in controlling anger is ghee nasya.
