What is Anal Fissure?
An anal fissure is a cut or tear occurring in the anus. The anus is the opening through which stool passes out of the body and extends into the anal canal. Fissures are a common condition of the anus and anal canal. They affect men and women equally irrespective of age. Fissures is normally a painful condition during bowel movements. It is the most common cause of rectal bleeding in infants.
What causes Anal Fissure?
The most common cause of anal fissure is trauma to the anus and the anal canal. It can be caused because of hard stool or repeated episodes of diarrhoea. Anal fissures can also be caused due to insertion of rectal thermometer, enema tip, endoscope or ultrasound probe.
What are the symptoms?
- Pain during bowel movements. Some people may experience sharp pain while cleaning themselves with toilet paper.
- Blood in the stool. The blood will be bright red and can be noticed when in the toilet or in toilet paper.
- Itching in the anal area that may be intermittent or persistent.
- Discomfort when urinating or urge to urinate often.
- Pus or bad-smelling discharge from the anal fissure.

- Drink adequate fluids to prevent constipation.
- Exercise regularly at least for 30 minutes. Work out promotes regular bowel movements and increases blood flow to all parts of your body, which may promote healing of an anal fissure.
