A boil, also known as a furuncle, is a deep and localized infection. It is most commonly caused by the bacterium Staphylococcus Aureus, which results in a painful swollen area on the skin caused by an accumulation of pus and dead tissue. In this blog, I will be sharing Ayurvedic treatment for boils.

What are boils?

A boil is a skin infection that originates in a hair follicle or oil gland. The infected area of skin turns red and becomes swollen or forms a lump. After a few days, the lump turns white as pus collects under the skin. Boils appear on the face, neck, armpits, shoulders and buttocks. A group of boils can appear together. It is a type of more severe infection called a carbuncle.

What are the Causes of Boils?

Most boils are caused by a germ or bacteria known as Staphylococcus aureus. This germ enters the body through tiny cuts in the skin or travels down the hair to the hair follicle. Studies have proven that a few health problems can cause such infections too. They include:

What are the Symptoms of Boils?

A boil starts as a hard, red, painful lump usually about half an inch in size. Over the next few days, the lump becomes softer, larger, and more painful. Soon a pocket of pus forms on the top of the boil.

These are the signs of a severe infection:

  • The skin around the boil becomes infected, turns red, painful, warm, and swollen
  • More boils may appear around the original one
  • Sudden fever because of the infection in a few people
  • Swollen lymph nodes in few cases

  • Warm compress works best. It will decrease the pain and help bring the pus to the surface. A warm compress can be made by soaking a washcloth in warm water and squeezing out the excess moisture.
  • Once the boil starts to drain, wash it with an antibacterial soap until all the pus is gone and clean it and apply a medicated ointment and a bandage. Continue to wash the infected area two to three times a day and to use warm compresses until the wound heals.
  • Never pop the boil with a needle, because it could make the infection worse.

A word of advice:

Skin wounds and cuts should be immediately cleaned, no matter how small they are. It is advisable to avoid tea, coffee, alcohol, hot spices, fried foods, white sugar, white flour, acidic and sour foods. Minimize consumption of red meat.

Testimonial: Ayurvedic treatment for boils

Tanisha – 16 years.

I want to praise and thank Dr. Brahmanand Nayak. He is a very friendly and caring doctor. A few months ago I developed a boil on my neck, I pierced it and the infection became severe. More boils started appearing around it. When we visited Dr. Brahmanand Nayak, he treated me very well and asked to avoid eating certain types of foods. The medicines he gave me, made the pain go down and the boils also disappeared after a week.
