The study quoted that it helps in reducing stress, curing insomnia and controlling emotion and improving attention.
But the thing that flamed a fire was the fact this new invention of “cardiac-coherence breathing” is nothing new. It is the process of “inhaling for five seconds, then exhaling for the same amount of time”.
Ring a bell? It’s our very own and ancient practice of ‘Pranayama’.

Practicing Pranayama
One can easily say that cardiac-coherence breathing is nothing but Pranayama!
Pranayama is a Sanskrit word that comes from ‘Prana’ meaning life and Yama meaning ‘control’. It is a type of meditation that involves controlled breathing. And it is an age-old practice.
Pranayama is a simple practice and anyone can do it.
Close the left nostril with your thumb and inhale for five seconds from the right one. Now, hold your breath and exhale slowly with the other nostril. This simple tip calms the mind, controls anxiety and regulates heartbeats.

Rebranding Pranayama as cardiac coherence breathing
The study claimed that it is the first doctrine to build a theory around respiratory control. It further said that controlled breathing can help increase longevity.
The study also quoted that coherent cardiac breathing as the new exercise everyone needs to practice. This rebranding of old concept as modern discovery did not go well with many.
People took to Twitter to condemn the article including Congress Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor. He said, “Detailed description of the benefits of the 2500-year-old Indian technique is dressed up in 21st century scientific language as “cardiac coherence breathing”!
It’s taking the West a few millennia to learn what our ancients taught us millennia ago, but hey, you’re welcome…”. Soon a flood of trolls followed the claims. They pointed out the diplomacy of the west in appreciation and appropriation of cultures.

Cardiac coherence breathing – It’s just Pranayama!
The simple practice of Pranayama is a common household practice in India. The benefits are copious and it is a good sign that these practices are now spreading across boundaries. This is hepling more people are reaping the benefits.
Looking at the other side, it only makes sense to give India its due credits! Pranayama or “coherent cardiac breathing” has originated in this holy land. And now since its getting acceptance with evidence, our ancestors too shall get the recognition they deserve.
It’s time we stand up to such cultural theft and misinterpretation of our traditional tools. Modern cardiac-coherence breathing is nothing but our very own Pranayama!

No matter how westerners twist and turn the names but yoga is like an pure soul .The purity of soul remains same no matter how beautifully you rename our culture and it’s practices.
Though India got independence from British, new age Indians are becoming hard core slaves of western culture. This is very unfortunate and we should make more efforts to inculcate respect and acceptance of our Indian culture in kids at primary schooling level.
