Dry Skin, also known as xeroderma or xerosis is a common skin condition characterized by a lack of the adequate amount of water in the skin or the epidermis. It affects males and females equally. What is Dry Skin?
Dry skin is an uncomfortable condition that causes scaling, itching, and cracking. It can occur for a variety of reasons. Dry Skin occurs commonly on the legs, arms, and abdominal area.

What causes dry skin?
- When temperatures and humidity levels drop it can cause dryness.
- Long exposure to central heating systems, wood-burning stoves, space heaters and fireplaces reduce humidity and lead to dry skin.
- Taking long, hot showers or baths can dry your skin.
- Frequent swimming, particularly in heavily chlorinated pools will cause dry skin.
- Soaps, detergents, shampoos, deodorant and antibacterial soaps cause the most damage to the skin.
- Ultraviolet (UV) radiation of the Sun causes deep wrinkles and loose, sagging skin.
- Atopic dermatitis (eczema) or a skin condition marked by a rapid buildup of rough, dry, dead skin cells that form thick scales (psoriasis) are prone to dry skin.

What are the symptoms?
Dry skin is likely to cause one or more of the following:
- The tightness of the skin, especially after bathing or swimming
- Skin that feels and looks rough
- Itching
- Slight to severe flaking, scaling or peeling
- Fine lines or cracks
- Gray, ashy skin in people with dark skin
- Redness
- Deep cracks that lead to bleeding

Ayurvedic Treatment for Dry Skin
According to Ayurveda, dry skin is caused by Vata dosha. When Vata dosha increases in the body it reduces Kapha and makes skin dry and wrinkled. Kapha keeps skin soft and smooth but Vata makes the skin dry and rough.
Home remedies you can try:
- Take a bath every alternate day.
- Limit your bathing time to 5 to 10 minutes
- Avoid hot showers
- Use a moisturizing soap
- Avoid scrubbing dry skin patches
- Pat your skin dry with a soft towel
- Always use a moisturizer immediately after bath

A word of advice:
- Avoid strong soaps and detergents.
- Drink plenty of water.
- Avoid wool clothing.
