Avoid Eating Curd at Night: The Reason Why ?

Ayurveda says you should never consume curd at night.

Curd is one of the healthiest ingredients that you must add to your meals. It is rich in calcium, phosphorus, and other minerals for bone and tooth health. Curd helps to hydrate the body, strengthens immunity, improves digestion, builds stronger bones, helps in improving skin texture, and also aids immunity. But most importantly, the good bacteria present in curd are very good for the gut.

Ayurveda too highly recommends the consumption of curd for its health benefits. But the Vedic science also warns about taking it in the right combinations, and the right amount and most importantly consuming it at the right time.

Can you consume curd ( Dahi)at night?

Ayurveda strongly suggests against consuming curd at night. It is heavy to digest and can cause trouble in digestion. People suffering from congestion in the chest, cough, and cold should especially avoid having curd at night. It can create an imbalance in Kapha, thus causing mucus formation. Asthma patients and people having allergies should also avoid consuming curd at night. The mucus formation can worsen the symptoms of asthma.

However, if you still wish to consume curd at night, there are a few ways to do that. Firstly, you can consume curd in the form of buttermilk. It is one of the healthiest beverages and consuming buttermilk at night does not have any adverse effects. Secondly, you can also add a pinch of pepper powder or fenugreek powder to your curd. This will help improve your digestion and relieve indigestion or stomach pain that can be caused by curd.

Things that every curd lover must know

  • You should never heat your curd. Curd loses its properties due to heating.
  • People with obesity, asthma, bleeding disorders, and inflammatory conditions should avoid curd.
  • Also, you must not consume curd on a daily basis. It is high in fats and consuming curd regularly can result in obesity.
  • If you want to have curd on a daily basis, then have it in the form of churned buttermilk with added spices like rock salt, black pepper, and cumin. Buttermilk has several benefits and it aids in weight loss.
  • Never mix your curd with fruits. Curd and fruit are incompatible. Though it might not cause big trouble if you consume it once. Long-time consumption of such combinations would trigger metabolic issues and allergies.
  • Curd is incompatible with meat and fish. If you are cooking your chicken, mutton, or fish with curd then it will produce toxins in the body. So, stop marinating your meat with curd.
  • The best time to have curd is during the afternoon and in moderation.
