Long-distance relationship deserves the best redemption. A date after seven months of separation is meant to be a fairytale reunion. So, we splurged our pockets and booked a table at this place with an ecstatic ambiance and mesmerizing aura.
As I went through the menu drooling over the delicacies, I could hardly fathom the fancy names and unexplored tastes. I passed the ball and asked him to surprise me.
He named quite a few dishes but those were the tried and tasted. ‘Chinese – I had enough’, ‘Pizza – you don’t like it’, ‘Chicken Curry – We have it every time’.
I had this urge to go for a more memorable expedite. It went on for half an hour and I stroked through almost half the menu. He called the waiter to pin the order. As I sat there with my hopes high and mouth-watering, his words came as a crushing blow.
Ayurvedic Khichdi?
‘Dal Khichdi!!!’
It was not a surprise but a sheer shock.
The foodie in me was dreaming of some continental magic.
I sat there quietly trying to keep my calm and my anger controlled, not to ruin the date. My face turned red and my mood was completely spoiled! ‘Khichdi in a Date?’ I had never heard of a bigger disaster!
Seeing my smile wean away he came closer and narrated to me a little story from his voyage.
Khichdi in Germany
‘I was in Germany. The chilling winter and beating hunger drove me crazy. I walked for miles of those unknown lanes in search of an Indian restaurant.
I wanted something light on the stomach and easy on digestion. The last few days had been pretty rough and my body was too weak to digest the meat and fish.
After moving in a loop for about 45 minutes, I asked a local if there is any Indian restaurant nearby. He led me to a small motel and I got cautious if he was just a mugger.
But I was too hungry to think straight. So I kept walking following his footsteps that led to a petite eatery. It was small but bustling with people, waiting in a queue at the doors of the small inlet.
I had never seen something like this in a foreign land.
He ordered rice and lentils and went on to applaud this new dish making a great buzz in the city. It was this new Ayurvedic way of life that caught the city’s attention and Khichdi is one of the prime meals that accomplishes its purpose.
