From the finances to the fun, how are you planning your retirement?
Retirement is tough as it means beginning a new life at 60. But it’s tougher if it comes without a plan. Particularly these days, when kids move away and parents are left with empty nests. Recently, one of my patients called me. He shared the news of his retirement and told me that they were moving back to the village.
After living in the city for more than 3 decades, shifting cities was not an easy choice. Both husband and wife were working in the public sector as engineers. They had cultivated a great social life in Bangalore.
A few years ago, their children got married and moved to Australia. That was the first time when emptiness struck them. But with their jobs and daily life, they were able to keep the wheel of time in rotation.
However, after retirement, time seemed to stop. Every day became a struggle. The emptiness of the house was haunting but even the crowd made them feel lonely. So, the couple decided to move to their village. They own farms and paddy fields and that was their retirement plan. Spending time in the place where they had the most precious memories of childhood.

Planning your retirement
Having a plan and a backup plan is very essential when it comes to retirement.
One cannot work till 80. Though a few manage to do that should not be the goal!
Learn in childhood, work and earn in adulthood, and rest and rethink in old age. That’s what Ayurveda says about the cycle of life. Old age is more about reflection and submission.

It’s more difficult for the men
The post-retirement period is often a bigger challenge for men than women. Women are more social than men and they have a life outside work. But for most men, their only identity is their career.
So, when the career comes to an end, they go through a phase of an identity crisis.
Research states that retirement makes men feel lost and lonely.
Also, women adapt to the phases of life better than men.
This may be because of the natural transitions a women’s body goes through.
From mensuration to motherhood to menopause, women have to handle different challenges of transitioning. While for men, life remains pretty much the same revolving between home and office.
That’s why men need to plan this one major transition in their life. With proper planning, retirement can be enjoyable and meaningful. Financial planning can make retirement stress-free. And having your partner close makes it a smooth ride.
That’s why people emphasize the magic of ‘growing old together’. That’s when you both need to lean on each other. When the kids move out and colleagues part away, couples should engage with each other.

1. Things you enjoy doing together

At seventy, you don’t want to be that oldie who bores the hell out of a group talking all about their life. So, read a few books on socializing and blend in with the new lingo and gen. You can start with ‘how to win friends and influence people.’ It’s fun to be the coolest and the wisest in a group.
Research shows that social isolation can negatively impact retirement. It’s associated with poor health, high blood pressure, and immune dysfunction. So, you have all the more reasons to join the party at seventy. Join the local clubs, go to public events and make new friends and entertain your partner’s friends as well.
4. Volunteer together for a noble cause
It always feels good to do a good deed. Whether you sow some seeds in the neighborhood, feed and foster the animals or help the one who needs your help. You can also join an NGO together or start your own serving community. Start up a playgroup for kids.
Even creating a group for the elderly who are struggling through the transition is a noble deed. This helps you to uplift people of your age and give them new dreams and aspirations. The cause can be anything that you feel connected to, the only thing important is your contribution.
5. Travel together as much and as often
There is no pleasure like the pleasure of traveling. And with all the 365 days of vacation, what’s better than planning some exotic trips? Plan your retirement travels way before your retirement. Because that’s the kind of funding you would need.
For this too you need to discuss the kind of places that you both would enjoy. Whether it’s the hills or the beaches or someplace more adventurous. You need to discuss your travel wishes and come to a mutual choice. That’s the best thing about retirement.
6. Hit the fitness regime together
Oh! This one is so much important and so much fun. Yet many people fail to include this in their plans. Staying fit and healthy is the most important thing you need to aim for. So, be each other’s fitness trainer, pull the leash on limits, and unleash it all in the gym.
You can also go tune up your workouts together. Whether it’s the gym or yoga or walking or any other form of exercise. Make sure to motivate each other and drag each other out of the bed even on those blue days. Put a limit on the plate and don’t skip meditation.
7. Relive your life
One thing that brings immense pleasure is to turn back and look at the life you lived. Revisit the memories you created, revisit your old friends, go to places you once visited, and look at the photo album. Relive the good moments often to remember and be grateful for all the good days that you lived.
