Many people find it hard to drink plain water, but you can make water taste better.

Recently one of my aunts was diagnosed with renal calculi. She hardly drinks water and when I asked why her water intake is so less, she simply said that she does not like the taste of it.

Now that was a challenge for a doctor as drinking the required amount of water is essential to flush the toxins out of the body. So, I had to come up with a few creative ways to make drinking water taste better.

When I started studying this, I discovered that it is a very common problem. There are so many people who don’t like the taste of plain water. Not drinking enough water can result in a number of health issues. Ranging from dry skin to constipation, fatigue to weight gain, and kidney stones to stroke. It also creates a mental fog, causes headaches, and can impact your performance.  

Not drinking enough water can also result in impaired immunity, bad breath, sugar cravings, and unhealthy choices. Drinking water is one of the simplest home remedies for a number of health issues including painful periods, dry skin, and weight issues. Water helps in clearing toxins and keeping the vital organs functioning. So, here are a few tips that can help you drink more water by making your plain water taste better.

How to make water taste better?

Try some fruit-infused water

Adding citrus fruits like lemons or oranges can make your plain water taste better. You can also try adding different fruits to find out which flavor suits you best. This will not only help increase your water intake but you will also get the benefits of the fruit.

Drink your juices

Water in any form can help fulfill your hydration requirements. So, if you don’t like drinking plain water then make sure to drink ample natural fruit juices. Please note that the packaged fruit juices are laden with sugar. So, go for all-natural juices that you can prepare at home. The simplest choices are watermelon, grape, pomegranate, and apple. These fruits and juices also contain loads of vitamins and antioxidants too.

Break some ice on the glass

Many people find the taste of cold water better than plain water at room temperature. While drinking icy water is not ideal you can add a few cubes to your glass and drink it down. 

Have some hot tea

Tea is an excellent source of antioxidants, and it is also a good source of hydration. Try herbal, green, white, and red teas without sugar. They have an unending list of health benefits. 

Try basil water

Many people fell in love with basil water as it not only tastes better but also works as a boon for your body and skin. It helps prevent respiratory disorders, boosts your immune health, lowers your blood sugar levels, eases joint pain, protects your stomach, and clears your skin.

Get some Ginger water

Ginger is a great diuretic. It not only helps in increasing your thirst but also helps in promoting normal blood sugar levels. Studies also found ginger water effective in aiding weight loss.

One of the favorite summer drinks, Jeera water is packed with antioxidants. Rich in copper, iron, vitamins, zinc, and potassium, jeera water is an excellent remedy for weight loss, insomnia, and bloating. As I said hydration comes from all foods that contain water. Whether it’s watermelon or a bowl of soup, buttermilk, or daal. Make a conscious effort to add more of these watery foods to your diet and you don’t have to count your glasses.

  • Always keep your water bottle handy. Some people end up drinking way less water just because of plain laziness. 
  • Download a reminder app that will help you track your water intake.
  • Avoid snacking in the middle of the day. Whenever you feel hungry or bored drink a glass of water.
  • Sip water 30 minutes before your meal. This will help control your meal portion. Also, drink a glass of water every time after the bathroom.
  • Eat spices as that may help increase your thirst.
  • Work out.
  • Stay away from sugary or carbonated drinks. Alcohol and soda are laden with sugar which can make you dehydrated.

As an Ayurvedic doctor, I have come across numerous cases where individuals complain of the lack of taste or unpleasant taste of water. While it may seem trivial, the taste of water plays a crucial role in our daily lives, as it is essential for the proper functioning of our bodies.

According to Ayurveda, water is considered one of the five elements that make up the universe, and its quality can greatly impact our health. The taste of water is influenced by various factors, such as its source, temperature, and mineral content.
