Is it Safe to Drink Coffee During Pregnancy?

Coffee is one of the world’s most loved brews that also brings along a host of health benefits. From stimulating the brain to enhancing longevity, the coffee beans are a boon. But then why do we hear a murmur to avoid coffee during pregnancy

Is this another old wives’ tale or is there some truth to this mist?

Let’s find out.

Ayurveda has always laid special emphasis on the diet of pregnant women. It is very crucial for both the mother and the child within. We all know some of the popular Ayurvedic recipes for pregnant women.

Like avoiding papaya and pineapple or eating raisins, nuts, milk, and saffron!

Ayurvedic doctors also advise pregnant women to limit their caffeine intake.  WHO and NHS recommend women limit their caffeine intake during pregnancy to 200mg per day.

Why do they say don’t drink coffee during pregnancy?

It’s believed that caffeine can slightly increase the risk of miscarriage. Caffeine can permeate the placental barrier. Very high consumption of caffeine has a greater risk of pregnancy loss or stillbirth.

Too much caffeine during pregnancy can also impact the body’s ability to absorb iron. This increases the risk of iron deficiency or anaemia. So, those who already suffer from low iron levels should steer clear of coffee during pregnancy.

Also, different people may react differently to caffeine during pregnancy. While in some a cup or two may be relaxing, in some it may cause side effects. Coffee may increase the tendency to poop thus increasing the runs to the restroom. The warm brew may also worsen heartburn or cause shakes or jitters in some pregnant women.

However, when consumed in low amounts, say one cup a day of coffee, it is safe. But I would still advise you to consult your doctor and share your detailed health history before designing your diet for pregnancy!

Research quotes on Coffee during Pregnancy

In recent years, there has been much research on this subject sparking a hot debate on its safety during pregnancy. There is strong evidence that suggests a high intake of caffeine is bad for developing fetuses.

There is convincing research on the claim that excess coffee can cause low birth weight in babies. Low birth weight in babies can increase the risk of health problems later in life. Experts further say that very high intakes like more than eight cups a day are certainly harmful.

Some studies suggest excess consumption of coffee can increase the risk of stillbirth late in pregnancy. A 2015 study found that even low intakes of caffeine can increase the risk of miscarriage. Though the reported increase in risk is small.

But further studies from 2016 and 2017 ruled out this claim. The studies stated that a low intake of caffeine may not be associated with an increased risk of miscarriage. Though higher amounts are harmful.

Overall, the evidence indicates that small amounts of caffeine are unlikely to cause miscarriages. However, the risk cannot be ruled out completely. As the risk also depends on the individual’s health status.

Reducing your caffeine intake

If you are a coffee addict then you should probably switch to decaf coffee as it contains less amount of caffeine. Remember, you can consume up to 150 mg to 200 mg of caffeine daily, but not more than that!

Try to replace the hot brew with natural juices, coconut water, or herbal teas. As you cut down on your coffee consumption, make sure to take care of your hydration. Drink plenty of water to keep the system smooth!

Caution – It’s not just coffee that contains caffeine

  • Caffeine is also present in tea, though the amount is less than coffee.
  • Chocolate and carbonated sodas also contain caffeine.
  • Some medicines may also contain some trace of caffeine.
  • Energy drinks may contain very high levels of caffeine.

Is coffee safe during pregnancy – Ayurvedic Doctor’s advise!

Most working women crave a cup of coffee to drag through the day. And 4 to 6 cups of coffee soon become a habit. Though this is not harmful if you keep a check on the added sugar, it is harmful during pregnancy!

I would say caffeine is one thing you should tick off your list during pregnancy.

You can consume it occasionally and in low quantities. But the usual number of coffee cups must come down.  A cup of instant coffee is better than your espresso shots!

It’s worth noting that the amount of caffeine in coffee is highly variable. A cup of instant coffee is pretty standardized, but the espresso can have a bit less or far more caffeine in it, depending on a range of factors.
