The Magic of Jayant Kaikini’s Songs: How Music Can Help to Reduce Stress

Music is the greatest escape that helps you sail through the storms of life. Research too says that Music for stress is an excellent remedy. Be it a sad break-up or a stressful day, listening to music is the greatest escape!

Studies also say that music can help beat drivers’ stress!

Music for stress – A clinical patient

I met a sweet Bengali woman a few days back. She came to me for consultation on repeated episodes of headaches. About 5 years back, she shifted to Bangalore to live with her husband.

But the trouble in their paradise hit hard when she moved from a nuclear family to a big tree joint family. Growing up with her progressive parents, she became an independent woman who looked at the world with a practical frame of spectacle.

She hardly did a chore at home and now she manages a family of 15 members. It all looks good and glamorous in the movies where they have ample of helping hands but real life is very different. The work never ends.

Every evening she got a headache. She took painkillers initially to combat her headache, but she knew it was not a solution. She decided to quit the pills and tried alternative ways.

An underrated therapy for stress

Being born in a Bengali house, music was ingrained in her blood, it was her immediate hideout. She started listening to Kannada music on FM radio to distract her mind.

The calm music helped in easing her headaches. When she started to understand the lyrics, she found a fond inclination toward Jayant Kaikini’s songs.

I was intrigued by her taste in music and asked her if she understood the language so well. She smiled and said, ‘I don’t understand the meanings entirely but I know more than 150 songs’ lyrics by heart, all by Jayant Sir.

Music is beyond the barriers of language and his songs speak to my soul.

Just to make me believe, she sang Anisutide Yako Indu Song in my clinic.

Music for stress

Music therapy has been known to treat stress since antiquity. Research on music therapy revealed its efficacy in improving mood and combating stress. It is also a great remedy for depression and insomnia.

Music helps in counteracting stress. Slow meditative music automatically slows down breathing and relaxes the mind. This is just one of the many things music does to the mind.

Soothing music affects physiological factors like heart rate, skin temperature, blood pressure, hormone levels, and respiration rate.

So, next time you feel burnt out just try tuning in to your favorite music. Of course, the evergreen songs of Jayant Kaikini.

Conclusion

Studies have shown that music can have a positive impact on physical and mental health.

Physical health:

  • Listening to music has been shown to decrease blood pressure and stress levels, improve sleep quality, and boost the immune system.
  • Some studies have also shown that music therapy can help alleviate pain and improve physical rehabilitation outcomes.

Mental health:

  • Music can have a positive impact on mood, reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety, and improving overall well-being.
  • Listening to music can also stimulate the release of “feel-good” hormones such as dopamine and serotonin.
  • Music therapy is sometimes used to help patients with mental health conditions such as PTSD, depression, and dementia.

It is important to note that the impact of music on health can vary based on individual preferences and experiences, and more research is needed to fully understand the relationship between music and health.

Just thought, if only one could make /describe actionable steps in applying “Music Therapy’. By this mean , First thing/ change that happens is shifting the focus from the unpleasant distress causing factor/parameter, next to concentrate on the new domasin, while in that state the compatible theme/ lyrics/ frequency/ pitch , calibrate that domain to derive best output.May be, my communication is not effective but wish more knowledgeable would examine , if what is said is meaningful a definition actionable method/ algorithm.

Importance of music in daily life is beautifully explained sir. There is no equivalent medicine to Music therapy as it heals from within both mind and body. Nowadays there are many musical therapy centres treating many effectively. Fortunate enough to attend such soothing raagas session in seminar.

They say every element in this universe originates from a sound vibration. Hence we see that music can harness nature! Animals as well as plants enjoy them! We have read what happened when Tansen began to sing in raag Deepak & Megha Malhar!
