Salt makes the body retain water and too much consumption of salt means excess water in the body. This puts an extra strain on the kidneys, arteries, heart and brain. The stress on the walls of the arteries results in elevated blood pressure.
Higher the blood pressure the greater is the risk of stroke, heart attack, dementia and kidney diseases.
Excess salt should be particularly avoided by blood pressure patients. As, it impacts the efficacy of blood pressure medicines such as diuretics. Doctors highly recommend regulated intake of salt after the first diagnosis of high blood pressure.

How much salt should be consumed?
The bodily requirement for salt per day is about 500 mg but the average consumption levels are much more than this. The allowed or recommended amount of salt for high blood pressure patient is about 1500 mg a day which is a little less than one teaspoon.
How to minimize Salt in high blood pressure
- Bid adeu to processed and preserved foods including pickles, biscuits, snacks, chips and restaurant foods.
- Foods high in salts like chips and snacks trigger an impulse in the brain that creates an urge to eat more of it. It’s best to avoid such food.
- Keep the salt shaker and sauces away from the dining table.
- Avoid fast foods like instant noodles, pasta etc.
- Quit alcohol and complimentary snacks.
- Try adding flavour to food with other spices and herbs.
- Add steamed veggies and fresh fruits to your diet. They allow lower salt consumption.
- Take Ayurvedic doctor’s suggestion

Nice article. The table salt which we use is added with some chemical which avoids clustering and melting in humid vonditions. What exactly is it is mot clear. It definitely is more harmful. And also now only artificially iodized salt is sold instead of natural salt for edible use.
