In BPH, the prostate gland grows in size and compresses the urethra and impedes the flow of urine. It can cause urine to back up in the bladder (retention) leading to the need to urinate frequently during the day and night.
What is BPH?
An enlarged prostate gland is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) It is also known as benign prostatic hypertrophy. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body. As the prostate gets bigger, it may squeeze or partly block the urethra causing problems with urinating.
What causes BPH?
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is caused by changes in hormone balance and cell growth. It is a normal part of the ageing process in men. Men who are above the age of 50 have a higher chance of developing BPH. Persons with severe BPH require surgery.
What are the symptoms?
The symptoms to watch out for are:
Improper urination or feeling that the bladder is not completely empty.
- Urgent feeling to urinate
- Urine incontinence or urine does not flow right away when you start to urinate or stops and starts again.
- Frequent urination, especially at night
- Weak urine stream
- Blood in your urine( in few cases)
- Pain during urination( in few cases)
Did you know?
BPH causes no symptoms or problems in two-thirds of men over the age of 50 years, but the chance of developing symptoms increases with each additional year.
Home remedies you can try:
- Try to urinate when you first feel the urge. Waiting too long to urinate may cause damage to the bladder.
- Urinate at regular times to empty the bladder.
- Stay active and do indulge in some physical exercise to help reduce urinary problems caused by enlarged prostate.
- Keep warm because cold temperatures can cause urine retention and increase the urgency to urinate.
A word of advice:
- Don’t drink anything for an hour or two before bedtime to help you avoid wake-up trips to the bathroom at night.
- Don’t drink too much caffeine or alcohol. It can worsen the symptoms.

Mohan Sundaram – 62 years.
A simple thank you is not enough to express my gratitude to Dr. Brahmanand. Nayak. I had been suffering from BPH problem for more than 3 years. I did not realize that it is a problem at all. One day, during a casual visit to the doctor I expressed the difficulty in passing urine. Then Dr. Brahmanand Nayak investigated further and made me understand the problem I had. An Ultrasound scanning confirmed that I had BPH. I was afraid of undergoing surgery and had a traumatic experience. He made me understand, gave me the confidence and assurance that nothing wrong will happen. I took ayurvedic treatment for one year Today, I am so relieved. I continue to follow his advice and I am free of BPH symptoms finally.
